What is a TOG?
Firstly, if you’re an expecting parent, you’re probably wondering what a TOG is? It’s shortened for Thermal Overall Grade. Babies are unable to regulate their own body temperature when wrapped up for sleep, so this is why we provide TOG measurements for Grow Kindly sleepwear. ‘TOG’ is the tested fabric weight (yes, Grow Kindly test all products for an accurate TOG weight) to give parents safer guidance on how to dress your newborn, baby and toddler for sleep according to room temperature, the rule of thumb is, the lighter the thickness, the lighter the TOG and you’ll use lighter TOGs for warmer temperatures.
Why Swaddle my newborn?
Swaddling your baby during their first few months of life not only aids in settling them to sleep but also helps manage their Moro reflex, reducing disruptions to their sleep and promoting longer periods of rest. This helps recreate the snug environment they experienced in the womb, leaving them feeling safe and secure.
What’s so unique about Grow Kindly Swaddle Sleeping Bags?
The Grow Kindly Swaddle Sleeping Bags are available in 3 different thickness TOG’s from 0.5 TOG, 1.0 TOG and 2.5 TOG, to dress your baby in for Nursery temperatures ranging from 14°C – 26 °C, anything cooler or warmer we suggest using a heater or air con / fan to help stabilise the room temperature for your newbie. The Swaddle Sleeping Bags have been designed to be used as a Swaddle (arms-in sleeping) or as a Sleeping Bag (arms out sleeping), with press studs on the arms for both configurations. There’s a soft, comfortable enclosure that protects your baby’s skin and doesn’t stretch open to expose any skin while using as a swaddle, keeping your baby protected and warm. It’s recommended that you use the Swaddle in arms-in configuration in the first few months (aka third trimester) to help manage startle reflex.
No baby is born the same, therefore you won’t know how strong your baby’s startle is until you meet your newbie. If you’re blessed with a baby who’s arms are relaxed and have more control, then you won’t need to swaddle, but you can use your Grow Kindly Swaddle and Sleeping Bag as just a Sleeping Bag.
When should I un-swaddle my baby?
We recommend bubs remains in an arms in swaddle until close to 4 months (unless confidently rolling earlier) to help manage their moro/startle reflex. This will minimise disruption to their sleep avoid cat naps developing. It’s important to practice arms out sleeping close to 4 months when your baby starts showing signs of rolling to ensure your baby doesn’t roll onto their tummy while swaddled.
How can I safely un-swaddle my baby without disrupting their sleep too much?
Another benefit of having a all-in-one Swaddle Sleeping Bag is that you can release just one arm out at a time to reduce sleep disruptions. We recommend encouraging your baby to sleep with one arm out for a week then remove the other arm from the swaddle configuration until your baby is confidently sleeping with both arms out.
